4 January 2007 - Local business committee presents cheques worth £18,000 to Barnardo's and Peterborough Sports Aid

The Peterborough Fundraising Committee today presented a cheque for £17,000 to national charity Barnardo’s and a cheque for £1,875 to Peterborough SportsAid. The money was raised from several events held in 2006 including the committee’s prestigious annual Question of Sport event, the annual County Ball held at the Peterborough Holiday Inn, and a Ten-Pin Bowling evening.

Committee member and Question of Sport organiser Mark Stevens from Preston’s Physiotherapy said “The committee are very happy to have exceeded our total raised for charity last year by £5,000. This donation speaks volumes about the generosity of the people of Peterborough and it fills the committee with a sense of pride that we are able to donate such a large figure to such a worthy cause.”

Fellow committee member Ken Craig of Rawlinsons Chartered Accountants added, “The committee are looking forward to the New Year and we already have several new charity events planned including a fundraising night at the new Royal Fusion Restaurant in Uffington and potentially a sporting dinner at Peterborough Rugby Club. Our intentions are to continue with the Question of Sport event and the County Ball, which have become permanent fixtures on the Peterborough charity calendar.”

Accepting the cheque was Barnardo’s UK Assistant Head of Fundraising Jez Alcock and Peterborough SportsAid Committee member Andy Cox. Jez Alcock said “It is fantastic that Peterborough has such an active fundraising community and it is a real testament to the people of this City. The efforts of the Peterborough Fundraising Committee in 2006 have been tremendous and the events they organise are always a lot of fun for all involved. I would strongly recommend anyone who was unable to attend one of their events this year to get involved in 2007.”
